Circumstances and inflation notwithstanding, this is the lowest domestic debut for a Disney toon since Winnie the Poo opened against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows part II with a mere $7.7 million in July of 2011.
The $8.25 million domestic debut of Raya and the Last Dragon was maybe 1/5 of what would have been expected for even a “disappointing” Disney toon launch like Onward ($39 million on this weekend last year in 4,310 theaters) or The Good Dinosaur (a $55 million Wed-Sun Thanksgiving launch in 2015).
